Envision Evergrain is Envision’s uncapped composite deck board, made with the company’s Compress Technology and sold in 1×6 and 2×6 profiles. It carries a 25-year residential and commercial limited warranty, and the 2×6 can span joists at up to 24 in. on center. This guide covers Evergrain’s specs, how it compares with Envision’s capped lines, and what to check before you choose it for your deck.

Evergrain is Envision’s uncapped classic board.

Uncapped means the board has no separate protective shell wrapped around the core. Envision builds Evergrain with its Compress Technology and positions it as its classic line. Here are its published specs:

  • Profiles: 1×6 (actual 7/8 in. x 5-1/2 in.) and 2×6 (actual 1-7/16 in. x 5-1/2 in.), with a 12 in. skirting board.
  • Lengths: 12, 16, or 20 ft for the 1×6, and 16 or 20 ft for the 2×6.
  • Edges: grooved or square. Redwood comes in square edge only.
  • Colors: Weathered Wood, Cape Cod Grey, and Redwood. Envision notes the colors usually weather to a lighter shade within the first several months.
  • Spans: 16 in. at 90 degrees for the 1×6, and 24 in. for the 2×6.
  • Warranty: 25-year residential and commercial limited warranty, with a 5-year full start period.

The 2×6 profile is the reason many builders pick it.

Most 1 in. composite boards need joists at 16 in. on center or closer. The Evergrain 2×6 is rated for 24 in. at 90 degrees and 16 in. at angles up to 45 degrees. That makes it a practical choice for resurfacing an older wood deck framed at 24 in., for boardwalks and docks where a thicker board feels more solid underfoot, and for stair treads, where Envision lists 16 in. stringer spacing for the 2×6. Always confirm your existing framing is sound and level before you resurface.

Here is how Evergrain compares with Envision’s capped lines.

Envision also makes capped boards, which add a protective outer layer. Here is how the current lines compare on published facts:

Envision says its Cool Tread boards run up to 25% cooler, with up to 33% better traction and up to 61% less moisture absorption than the average of leading competitors. Those are manufacturer claims. If your deck sits in full Gulf Coast sun around a pool, ask us about Cool Tread colors alongside Evergrain.

Independent ratings are worth a look.

Consumer Reports tests composite decking in its labs and has rated Envision Evergrain. Its testing has covered resistance to flexing, slipping, staining, and surface damage, along with weathering. How to choose the right board for your deck.

  1. Start with your use. A pool deck puts slip resistance and heat first. A deck with large dogs or heavy furniture puts more weight on surface durability.
  2. Check your framing. If your joists are at 24 in. on center, only the 2×6 Evergrain is rated for that span. The 1×6 boards need 16 in. or less.
  3. Expect some color change. Evergrain lightens over the first several months, so judge samples that have seen some sun if you can.
  4. Look at boards in person. Ask us for samples so you can compare texture and color in your own light.
  5. Read the warranty. Envision’s limited warranty applies to products installed according to its written instructions, and claims must be started within 30 days of discovering an issue.

Installation matters as much as the board you choose.

How the deck is built has a large effect on how any board performs over time. Envision’s installation guide covers the points that matter most:

  • Spans: 1×6 boards at 16 in. on center at 90 degrees and 12 in. for layouts up to 45 degrees, with a minimum of three joists per board.
  • Gaps: at least 1/8 in. side to side, plus end gaps sized to the temperature at installation.
  • Airflow: never install directly on concrete, membranes, or other solid surfaces, or where drainage and ventilation are poor.

Follow the manufacturer’s current installation guide, and see our article on composite decking joist spacing for a side-by-side look at other brands. Confirm deck and stair requirements with your local building department, since local amendments vary.
