Planning an outdoor kitchen with HDPE cabinets

How HDPE outdoor kitchen cabinets compare with stainless and masonry, and how to plan layout, cutouts, ventilation, and care for a Gulf Coast patio.

WeatherStrong base and drawer cabinets in an outdoor kitchen

HDPE outdoor kitchen cabinets use high-density polyethylene, a dense plastic that does not absorb water, for the parts you see and touch. They will not rust like steel or rot like wood, and they do not need sealing. A good plan still starts with the appliances, the landing space around them, and the gas and ventilation details, so here is how we walk customers through it using WeatherStrong cabinetry, which we supply.

HDPE is a dense plastic that does not absorb water.

High-density polyethylene is the same family of material used for cutting boards and many marine fittings. WeatherStrong builds its doors and drawer fronts from solid HDPE with color that runs all the way through, so a scratch does not reveal a different color underneath. Its 2026 Specification Guide lists the construction this way:

  • Doors and drawer fronts: 5/8 in. HDPE, UV-stabilized.
  • Cabinet box, back panel, shelves, and drawer boxes: 3/4 in. All-Weatherboard, a composite of phenolic resins, zinc borate, wax, and wood fibers.
  • Hardware: stainless steel hinges, drawer glides, and handles.

One detail surprises people. WeatherStrong leaves small gaps around doors and drawers on purpose for airflow, so the cabinets are not watertight. Expect some moisture inside after a hard rain, and do not store anything in them that cannot get damp.

HDPE, stainless, and masonry each trade off differently.

The last row matters. Some grill makers require a noncombustible enclosure, while others allow a combustible one with their insulating jacket. Check your grill’s installation manual before you choose the cabinet material.

Plan the layout around landing space.

The most common mistake we see is a beautiful run of cabinets with nowhere to set a platter. WeatherStrong’s guide recommends these clear counter widths:

  • Grill or pizza oven: 24 in. on one side and 12 in. on the other.
  • Sink: 18 in. on each side.
  • Refrigerator: 15 in. of counter above or beside it.
  • Side burner or cooktop: 12 in. on each side.
  • Prep: about 36 in. of uninterrupted counter.

Standard WeatherStrong base cabinets stand 34-1/2 in. tall, including 4-1/2 in. adjustable legs under a 30 in. box, and come 24 or 27 in. deep. Wall cabinets come 9, 12, or 15 in. deep. Add your countertop thickness to the base height to get the finished counter height.

Choose appliances before you finalize cutouts.

Cabinet cutouts are sized to specific appliances, so pick models first. WeatherStrong grill base cabinets come 36, 42, 48, or 60 in. wide and 27 or 30 in. deep. Side burner bases run 15 to 21 in. wide with a single door or 24 to 30 in. with double doors. Sink bases come 24 to 36 in. wide. Send us the make, model, and cutout dimensions for each appliance.

Grills, griddles, and side burners must go in with the insulating jacket the appliance manufacturer specifies. WeatherStrong states that running one without the jacket damages the cabinets and voids the warranty.

Gas islands need ventilation and clearance.

Propane is heavier than air, so a leak can collect at the bottom of an enclosed island. Grill makers handle this with vent openings, and their numbers vary. Weber’s Summit built-in LP guide, for example, calls for at least 100 sq. in. of venting per side on two sides of the structure, at both the top and the bottom, with bottom vents as close to the ground as possible. It also asks for 24 in. of clearance from the back and sides of the grill and says not to store a spare LP cylinder within 10 ft of the appliance.

Use your own grill’s manual for the exact vent size, clearances, and overhead requirements, and hire a licensed professional for gas and electrical connections. Confirm the requirements with your local building department, since local amendments vary.

Gulf Coast humidity and salt call for a care routine.

HDPE does not need sealing or refinishing, but coastal sites still need attention. Here is WeatherStrong’s guidance, adapted for our area:

  1. Rinse stainless parts often. In oceanfront locations, rinse and wipe handles, hinges, and drawer runners several times a month to remove salt.
  2. Clean gently. Use water and a soft cloth, mild dish soap for messes, or Simple Green with a soft-bristle brush. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners.
  3. Watch the heat. Keep cabinet surfaces below 265 degrees F, and keep hot pans off the countertop.
  4. Do not paint or modify the cabinets. WeatherStrong says that voids the warranty.

What to send us for an outdoor kitchen quote.

  • A sketch with wall lengths, corners, and any posts or columns.
  • Grill, side burner, refrigerator, and sink models, or ask us to suggest a package.
  • Gas type (propane or natural gas) and where the supply line comes in.
  • Door style, color, and countertop preferences.
  • Whether the kitchen is covered, and the project city.

Most quotes go out within 1 to 2 business days.

Frequently asked questions.

Is marine-grade polymer the same as HDPE?

The term is commonly used for HDPE sheet made for boats and docks. WeatherStrong describes its doors as HDPE marine-grade construction.

Can HDPE cabinets sit beside a pool?

WeatherStrong builds them for sun, salt, and rain. It does not publish specific guidance on chlorine splash, so rinse the cabinets after heavy splashing.

What warranty comes with WeatherStrong cabinets?

Custom-designed cabinets carry a limited lifetime warranty, and preset island cabinets carry a 25-year limited warranty. Countertops and refrigerators carry 1 year.
