Axiom South Cable Railing is our own cable railing line, built around 1/8-inch cable and face-mounted hardware that attaches to blank posts. It comes in 316 stainless or black and is sold in sets of one fixed end and one tensioner. One set handles a cable run up to 30 feet, and runs from 30 to 60 feet use a tensioner on both ends. We keep the cable and hardware in stock locally in Spanish Fort, Alabama, and ship to all 50 states.
The system is simple: cable, a fixed end, and a tensioner.
On runs up to 30 feet, each cable uses one set: a fixed end fitting on one post and a tensioner on the other. On runs over 30 feet, up to 60 feet, each cable gets a tensioner on both ends so it can be pulled tight from both sides. You count hardware for every horizontal cable in every run, then add the cable footage. Because the hardware face-mounts on blank posts, you do not need posts that come pre-drilled for a specific cable system.
- Cable size: 1/8 inch.
- Finishes: 316 stainless, or black cable with black hardware.
- Mounting: face-mounted on blank posts.
- Tensioning: one tensioner per cable on runs up to 30 feet, and tensioners on both ends for runs over 30 feet.
- Run length: up to 60 feet per cable run.
- Packaging: sold as sets, one fixed end plus one tensioner.
- Availability: cable and hardware stocked locally in Spanish Fort, AL.
Tensioning from both ends on long runs spreads the pull across both end posts and makes it easier to get even tension along the whole cable.
It works with wood, aluminum, or steel posts.
Since the hardware mounts to the face of the post, the line pairs with the post and top rail material that suits your project. That includes wood framing, aluminum railing posts, and steel posts. Contractors can match the cable to a frame they already build, and homeowners can mix cable infill with a top rail style they like.
Whatever the post material, the frame has to be strong enough to hold the cable under tension. Cable railing manufacturers such as Feeney note that properly installed cables typically carry 200 to 300 pounds of tension each. Multiply that by every cable in a run, and the end and corner posts take a real load. Stiff end posts, solid blocking, and a top rail tied to every post keep the cables tight and the gaps closed. Have your frame design checked against your local code and the requirements for your post material.
316 stainless matters near salt water.
Grade 316 stainless contains about 2 to 3 percent molybdenum, which improves its resistance to chlorides compared with grade 304. That is why 316 is the common standard for exterior cable railing and the usual recommendation for coastal sites. Feeney, for example, makes all of its cable and fittings from 316 grade, which it calls marine grade.
Here on the Gulf Coast, even 316 stainless benefits from routine care: rinse or wash the cable and fittings with mild soap and fresh water a few times a year to remove salt, and recheck tension periodically. For a deeper look at metals near the water, read our article on aluminum vs. steel railing on the coast.
Plan post heights and spacing before you order.
For a 42-inch rail, we size posts like this:
| Location | Post height for a 42 in. rail |
|---|---|
| Level runs | 42 to 44 in. |
| Stairs | 53 to 55 in. |
Stair posts run taller to account for the stair angle, since the cables follow the pitch of the stairs.
Cable spacing and post spacing are what keep the guard compliant. The model code (IRC R312.1.3) does not allow an opening that lets a 4-inch sphere pass through a required guard. Because cable flexes, the common practice is to space cables no more than 3 inches on center and keep the free span between posts or intermediate spacers to about 3 feet. Our article on cable railing spacing covers the details, including the larger openings allowed on stairs. Always confirm the rules with your local building department, since local amendments vary.
Ordering takes a sketch and a few numbers.
To quote Axiom South Cable Railing, we need the same information as any railing job:
- A top-view sketch with each straight run labeled and measured.
- Your post spacing, or the post layout you want us to plan.
- Rail height (36 or 42 inches, or what your code requires).
- Stairs, with riser count and total rise.
- Post material (wood, aluminum, or steel) and finish choice (316 stainless or black).
- Photos of the deck edge, corners, and stairs.
From that, we count fixed ends and tensioners, add a second tensioner on any run over 30 feet, total the cable footage, and flag any run that comes close to the 60-foot limit. We can quote the cable railing alone or together with posts, top rail, decking, and lighting. Our guide to measuring for a railing quote walks through each step. Most quotes go out within 1 to 2 business days.
Contractors and dealers can buy direct.
If you build decks or sell building materials, we offer a dealer program for Axiom South Cable Railing. Because we keep the cable and hardware in stock locally, we can fill repeat orders from Spanish Fort and ship them anywhere in the 50 states. Learn more on our cable railing dealer page or the for professionals overview.
We supply the materials and are building a nationwide network of independent installers. Homeowners can check for an approved independent installer by ZIP code on our find an installer page. Installers are independent contractors, not Axiom crews.
Frequently asked questions.
Do I need pre-drilled posts?
No. The hardware face-mounts on blank posts, so you can use wood, aluminum, or steel posts that are not drilled for a specific system.
How long can one cable run be?
Up to 30 feet with one fixed end and one tensioner, and up to 60 feet with a tensioner on both ends. Longer layouts are split into separate runs.
What comes in a set?
One fixed end and one tensioner, enough for one cable on a run up to 30 feet. For runs over 30 feet, each cable needs an extra tensioner in place of the fixed end.
