About Treated Pine Decking

Pressure-treated Southern Yellow Pine is the workhorse of wood decks. The preservative treatment helps the wood resist rot and insects, and the lumber is widely available in standard sizes, which keeps it among the more affordable decking choices in most regions. Grades are commonly sold as Select, #1 and #2.

Decking boards come in 5/4 x 6 (about 1 x 5-1/2 in. actual) and 2 x 6 (1-1/2 x 5-1/2 in. actual), in 8, 10, 12, 16 and 20 ft lengths. Treated lumber is rated for above-ground use (AWPA UC3B) or ground contact (AWPA UC4A). Deck boards are normally used above ground, while posts and joists near soil call for the ground-contact rating. Once dry, boards can be sealed or stained.

Use fasteners rated for treated lumber, such as hot-dip galvanized or stainless steel, and treat field-cut ends with a copper naphthenate preservative. For a quote, list board size, grade, lengths and counts, plus framing lumber and fasteners.

Installation notes
  • Use fasteners rated for treated lumber, such as hot-dip galvanized or stainless steel; follow the fastener maker’s guidance.
  • Field-cut ends should be treated with a copper naphthenate preservative (AWPA M4 recommends at least 2.0% copper metal).
  • Higher retention is required where wood touches the ground than above ground.
Frequently asked questions
Why do ground-contact boards need more preservative?

AWPA retention levels are higher for ground contact than above ground for every copper-based treatment, to resist decay and insects.

What fasteners should I use?

Fasteners meeting ASTM A153 Class D or better, or stainless steel; ordinary bright steel will corrode.
