About Chain Link Framework

The framework is the pipe skeleton of a chain link fence: terminal, line, corner and gate posts, top rail, braces and tubing. Axiom South supplies Schedule 40, Heavy Mil Schedule 40 and PT40 pipe framework, referenced to ASTM F1043.

Typical sizes include 1-1/2 in nominal line posts (1.900 in OD), 2 in terminal and corner posts (2.375 in OD), 2-1/2 in light gate posts (2.875 in OD), 3 in heavy gate posts (3.500 in OD), 4 in large gate posts (4.500 in OD) and 1-1/4 in top rail (1.660 in OD). Choosing the right post size for each position keeps the fence tight where the fabric is stretched.

When you request a chain link framework quote, include the fence height, total footage, pipe grade, the count of ends, corners and gates, gate widths and whether you want galvanized or color-coated pipe. We itemize each size and ship nationwide.

Installation notes
  • Terminal posts (end, corner, gate) must be set in concrete or otherwise anchored to resist tension.
  • Stretch fabric from one terminal post to the other, then tie to line posts and rails with fence ties.
  • A bottom tension wire can limit movement at the bottom of the mesh; hog-ring the fabric to it about every 2 ft.
  • A top rail is common but optional if terminal posts are braced and a top tension wire is used; fences 10 ft or taller often add intermediate rails.
Good to know

Nominal pipe size and outside diameter are not interchangeable; confirm wall type (Schedule 40 or lighter) at quote.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a top rail?

Not always. A top tension wire can replace a top rail when terminal posts are braced correctly, but taller fences often add intermediate rails.
