About Hardware Cloth
Hardware cloth is welded or woven steel mesh with small square openings. It keeps rodents and small animals out of places they do not belong and lines garden beds, coops and enclosures. It is a galvanized product, and the finer meshes use a lighter gauge wire, with the range running from 16 to 23 gauge.
Sizing is flexible. Openings come in 1/4 in, 1/2 in, 3/4 in and 1 in. Widths are 24, 36 and 48 in, and rolls are sold in 25, 50 and 100 ft lengths. The smaller openings are the choice when the goal is to stop rodents and other small pests, while larger openings suit general poultry and small-animal enclosures. It is also used to build humane animal trapping cages.
