Overview

About Deck Resurfacing

Deck resurfacing means replacing worn deck boards, stairs and fascia while keeping the existing frame, as long as that frame is still sound. It is a common way to update a tired wood deck at a lower cost than a full rebuild. Many owners resurface with composite or PVC boards so they stop the cycle of sanding, staining and replacing split lumber. A contractor should inspect joists, beams and posts first, since new boards are only as good as the structure below.

This page features Deck-Top PVC Deck & Dock Board Covers, which go over existing deck and dock boards to give the surface a new face. Before ordering, confirm the frame and current boards are sound, measure board widths and total square footage, and pick a color that suits the house and railing. Follow the manufacturer's installation guide for fastening and preparation. If you would rather replace the boards with new composite or PVC decking, Axiom South can quote alternatives on request.

How to choose

  • Has a contractor confirmed the existing frame is sound?
  • Are the existing boards flat, solid and free of rot?
  • Will you replace stairs, fascia and skirting at the same time?
  • What color and grain will update the house without clashing?
  • What is the budget compared with a full rebuild?
  • Check lead times so material is on site before work starts.
