Western Red Cedar posts, beams and rafters for pergolas, porches and outdoor structures, supplied to builders and homeowners who want naturally decay-resistant softwood.
About Cedar Posts, Beams & Rafters
Western Red Cedar is a naturally decay-resistant softwood used for posts, beams, rafters and trim. The heartwood contains thujaplicins, fungicidal compounds behind that resistance, and it is more durable than sapwood. Cedar is light, with a dried density around 24 to 25 lb/ft3, stable, and accepts stain and sealer well.
It does not need chemical treatment for above-ground use, though sealing slows weathering. Rough-sawn and surfaced lumber is sold by nominal size, and actual dimensions are smaller: 4×4 is 3-1/2 x 3-1/2 in, 4×6 is 3-1/2 x 5-1/2, 6×6 is 5-1/2 x 5-1/2, 2×6 is 1-1/2 x 5-1/2 and 2×8 is 1-1/2 x 7-1/4. Grade and moisture content vary by supplier, so we verify them at order.
