Douglas Fir Posts, Beams & Rafters
Douglas Fir posts, beams and rafters in kiln-dried, grade-stamped stock for timber frames, trusses, pergolas and heavy timber structures built by contractors and builders.
About Douglas Fir Posts, Beams & Rafters
Douglas Fir is a strong structural softwood with a high strength-to-weight ratio, widely used for posts, beams and rafters as well as timber frame construction, trusses and heavy timber structures. Common grades are Select Structural, No. 1 and No. 2. Stock is kiln-dried and grade-stamped, and very long members are available, up to about 60 ft.
It is not naturally rot resistant. Ground contact or exposed use needs preservative treatment, which is the main difference to weigh against cedar for outdoor work. Lumber is sold by nominal size and actual size is smaller: 4×4 is 3-1/2 x 3-1/2 in, 4×6 is 3-1/2 x 5-1/2, 6×6 is 5-1/2 x 5-1/2, 2×6 is 1-1/2 x 5-1/2 and 2×8 is 1-1/2 x 7-1/4.
Member sizing and grade should come from your plans or engineer. For a quote on Douglas Fir timbers, send a cut list with sizes, lengths, counts, grade and any treatment requirement. Axiom South ships nationwide.

Frequently asked questions
Why do beams get kiln-dried Douglas Fir?
Untreated timbers can contain pitch pockets that ooze resin; kiln-drying reduces this. Stain color varies naturally, so test first.
