Overview

About Composite Railing

Composite railing combines a wood-look finish with low upkeep. It is made from a blend of wood fiber and plastic, often with a protective shell, and is used on decks, porches, stairs and balconies. Many owners choose it to match composite decking so the whole project shares one look and maintenance routine. It resists rot and insects and does not need painting or staining, which helps in humid, sunny climates.

This page includes Envision Designer, Traditional and Modern Composite, Trex Transcend Railing, Trex Select Composite Railing (Classic and T-Rail), the TimberTech Classic Composite Series, Deckorators Composite Rail, Barrette Composite Railing and MoistureShield Deck Railing. Lines differ in rail profile, baluster style, color range and price, with Trex Select priced below Trex Transcend. Traditional styles suit classic homes, while modern profiles pair with slimmer rails. For post spacing and attachment, check local code and the manufacturer's installation guide.

How to choose

  • Should the railing match your decking brand and color?
  • Do you want a traditional or modern rail profile?
  • Which baluster type: composite, aluminum or another infill?
  • How many stair sections, corners and gates are involved?
  • What is the budget per linear foot?
  • Check lead times for colors, posts and stair kits.
