Overview

About Composite Decking

Composite decking is made from a blend of wood fiber and plastic, usually with a protective outer shell, and formed into boards that look like wood. It is used for backyard decks, pool surrounds, docks, porches and rooftop spaces where owners want a wood look without yearly staining. It does not splinter like lumber and resists rot and insects. In hot, humid and coastal areas, a capped composite holds up well against moisture, mildew and fading from strong sun.

This page covers seven brands: Envision, Trex, TimberTech, Deckorators, MoistureShield, Eva-Last and Sylvanix. Most offer several price tiers, from entry lines such as Trex Select and TimberTech Prime to upper lines such as Trex Signature and TimberTech Legacy. Tiers differ in grain realism, color blending and surface texture. Matching pieces include Envision Fascia & Skirting, Trex Fascia, TimberTech Fascia & Risers and the Deckorators Picture Frame Board, while Trex RainEscape and TimberTech DrySpace help keep the space below a deck drier.

How to choose

  • What look do you want: solid color, multi-tone grain or a weathered wood style?
  • What is your budget per square foot, including fascia, stairs and fasteners?
  • Does the deck sit in full sun, near a pool or close to salt water?
  • Do you need lighter colors to help with surface heat?
  • Will you use hidden fasteners or face screws?
  • Confirm color availability and lead times before the build starts.
